Assigning A Noise - Day 19 of 30 - Things That Make My Life Easier
Updated: Mar 18
Each day, I talk about one thing that makes my life easier as a neurodivergent mother raising neurodivergent kids while going back to school full-time in my 40s.
Assigning a noise...sounds crazy. I know. But it works for me.
Yesterday I spoke about how using a silly container helped me remember my keys. Along those same lines, creating a ridiculous phrase, noise, or sound, can also be used as a tool to help remember things.
For example: I often say "Nooooootes!" to myself in a silly voice to remember that I need to write something down. When I do this, I always remember to write it down. Why does it work? How would I know, I'm not a scientist. But if you know one or are one, please explain it to me. All I care about is that it actually works. (It also makes me feel ridiculous, which makes me laugh, which makes me happier, so technically it helps me work out my happiness muscle.)
Here's a list of sounds I currently make (they change) and what they're assigned to:
Noooooootes - to remember to write something down
Chiiiiiiiiiiiicken Little! - to remember my keys
The cats! OMG the CATS! (in a jewish new yorker accent) - to remember to feed them
Time to get up, time to go eat, get outta bed, stompa ya feet! (modified words to Stompa by Serena Ryder) - used to convince me and my children to get out of bed)
As I write this all down, it makes me think about another weird thing I do with sound. Typically, I need to write down what I want to say for interviews or presentations . I cannot, under any circumstance, be trusted to wing it...unless it's in a different accent. But then I'm left in a quandary. Sound like an idiot in my own accent, or sound coherent in a different one. Again, if you are a scientist or you know one, please tell my why this is possible.
Anywho. That's all for today.
